About the instructor
Course Description: Over the past 20 years Dr. Gillen has presented on Solution Focused Counseling skills and beliefs, and how to apply them to your school counseling practice. Dr. Gillen trained at the Brief Family Therapy Center in Milwaukee with the creators of SFC starting in the 1980’s and is recognized as a leader in the field.
This on-line training focuses on applying solution focused counseling into your daily practice and includes (1) a focus on foundational work that underlies all our counseling skills, (2) solution focused mindsets and techniques, and (3) case examples.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will engage with the foundational issues that support all our work with clients including developmental and cultural issues. The cornerstone of these issues is consideration of equity driven by the client, whom we rely upon to guide our understanding of where clients are and who they are.
- Participants will engage in solution focused mindsets that guide our work with clients.
Course Requirements:
- Must be a current WSCA Member
Course Progression: Participants navigate through SIX online asynchronous training modules at their own pace. The modules range from 10 to 21 minutes each. The six modules will be available during the spring semester.
After working through a module participants must successfully complete a 10 question multiple-choice quiz.
Participants complete the training by participating in at least ONE on-line synchronous session with Dr. Gillen after completing the six asynchronous sessions. These synchronous sessions will be scheduled at a variety of times in the spring semester.
Course Completion: Successful review of the SIX focused, brief asynchronous sessions and the accompanying multiple-choice quiz for each session. PLUS participating in at least ONE synchronous session with Dr. Gillen to ask questions, raise issues, and discuss Solution Focused Counseling.
Synchronous sessions will be scheduled on the following dates for you to choose from (only need to attend ONE):
- March 10, 2026 – 12:00 pm
- March 19, 2026 – 3:30 pm
- April 2, 2026 – 8:00 am
- April 8, 2026 – 12:00 pm
- April 22, 2026 – 3:30 pm
